Why People Actually Hit “Follow” (It’s Not What You Think)

Why People Actually Hit Follow (It's Not What You Think)

You can have the right posting schedule, use the right hashtags and share genuinely helpful content, yet still struggle to grow your audience.

That’s because follower growth on social comes down to two things: giving people a compelling reason to follow you and showing up consistently enough for them to make that decision.

If you’re an accountant, CPA or firm owner struggling to build a following, your strategy may not be the real problem. Your content may not be answering the questions people subconsciously ask before hitting follow. Or you may not be posting often enough for your content to gain traction.

Let’s break down both, starting with the three questions every potential follower is trying to answer.

The 3 Questions People Ask Before They Follow You

1. Would I want to grab coffee with this person?

The first question is all about connection. People follow people. They want to get to know the person behind the firm and your hot takes as an accountant.

So, let your personality shine through. Don’t just share tips.

Share your:

  • Personal experiences
  • Outcomes you’ve helped clients achieve
  • Opinions, especially if they go against the grain

But don’t just stop there. Comment on other people’s posts. Start conversations. This is how you build genuine connections that make people want to follow you and trust you.

2. Do I trust this person’s expertise?

This question is all about credibility. Are you giving people a reason to trust you? Credibility and authority can be built in many different ways.

Sharing knowledge is the most basic way, but I want you to go beyond that. Find a way to weave social proof naturally into your content.

Social proof could look like:

  • Case studies
  • Testimonials
  • Before/after results
  • Client outcomes
  • Credentials

Outcomes, case studies and testimonials can be so powerful for building your credibility and making people say, “yes” when they ask this question.

3. Will following them make my life or business better?

I would argue that this is the most important question of the three. Potential followers want to know that your content is going to help them in some way.

This means creating posts that show transformation, whether that’s:

  • Saving money
  • Highlighting a new perspective
  • Helping a client achieve their goal

Whenever you create content or come up with new content ideas, ask yourself: will this help people in some way and actually improve their lives?

Answering these three questions gives people a reason to follow you. But they can’t connect with you, trust your expertise or benefit from your perspective if you aren’t consistently putting it in front of them.

And that brings us to the second half of follower growth: actually showing up.

If you know what to post but still struggle to do it consistently, the problem usually isn’t a lack of time or strategy.

The Real Reasons You’re Not Posting & How it Affects Follower Growth

Knowing the three questions people ask before they follow you can help you create better and more engaging content.

But none of that really matters if you’re not posting.

Consistency isn’t always easy to achieve, but lack of time isn’t normally the issue.

Here’s what’s really holding you back.

You’re Not Fully Owning Your Perspective

For many people, the problem is that they haven’t fully embraced who they are or what they believe.

This mindset can hold you back and keep you from posting regularly.

Because when you believe in what you do, it’s much easier to share your thoughts. You don’t second-guess every word. You don’t worry as much about how someone may interpret your thoughts because you know what you meant and why you said it.

If someone said to me, “Your hair is purple,” I wouldn’t spiral over it. I’d simply think, “That is not true. My hair isn’t purple.”

The same thing happens when you feel truly grounded and confident in who you are and what you believe.

If you’ve been struggling to put yourself out there (which is important for question 1), take some time to think about these questions:

  • What do you know to be true about your work?
  • What opinions do you stand behind?
  • What have your experiences taught you that others haven’t learned yet?

The more confident you are in these answers, the less pressure you’ll feel when you share them with the world.

You’re Stuck in the ROI Trap

If you’re an accountant or a business owner, it’s easy to get stuck in the ROI mindset when it comes to social media.

We start treating social like client work and assume that putting in X amount of effort will get us Y.

The reality is that social media’s ROI is not linear. It can take six months or even a year to start landing those ideal clients, get invited to podcasts or have talent come to your firm saying, “We want to work with you.”

When we get stuck in that ROI mindset trap, it often stops us from missing the biggest opportunity that comes with consistent posting: building real relationships and authority.

As we learn how to articulate our thinking, we start building trust, credibility and relationships.

You Need Accountability

Social media is a long game. And it’s one that you have to constantly show up for. If you want to grow your following and pass those three questions potential followers ask, you need to be disciplined.

Because let’s be honest: Nobody is going to push you to post. You have to be your own coach. When you recognize that excuses (like, “tomorrow would be better”) are the real barrier and not a lack of strategy, it’s easier to stay accountable and consistent.

And here’s the good news: consistency compounds skill and confidence over time.

The Bottom Line

Growing a following isn’t about finding the perfect hashtag, posting at exactly the right time or chasing every new trend. It’s about giving people a reason to connect with you, trust you and believe that following you will make their life or business better.

Then, you have to keep showing up.

The next time you hesitate to post, don’t ask whether the post is perfect. Ask whether it helps people know you, trust you or learn something valuable from you. If it does, publish it.

Your audience doesn’t need a perfectly polished version of you. They need enough opportunities to see what you know, what you believe and how you can help.
