On this week’s Dear Katie, I was asked: How do you know what types of content to focus on? There is long form, short form, video, text, etc.? Where do you start and how do you know what to prioritize?
This is a great question. Now that 62.3% of the entire world’s population is on social media, content planning is more complicated. You need to know what types of content resonate most with your audience.
So, how do you know what to focus on?
The short answer is: always be testing so that you know what content to prioritize for your audience.
But how? Here’s my strategy.
First, pick a platform to test different hooks, angles, and topics your audience may be interested in. For example, maybe you want to post about reasons why your cash flow is down, tax strategies gone wrong, or client case studies.
Text posts will likely allow you to get tests out quicker, but you can use any content format you want for testing.
As you’re testing, pay attention to the response from your audience. Are any of your hooks receiving a disproportionate response compared to the others?
For example, let’s say that you normally get 300 views when you post content. If you post something new and it gets 2,000 views, this is a sign that your audience finds that content interesting.
Once you’ve found a hook that resonates with your audience, double down on it. Test out various forms of this hook.
You can even test it out on different platforms: LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Facebook, X, Instagram, etc.
While you’re at it, try out different types of content:
When it comes to video, be sure to test different video formats: speaking straight into the camera, interview format, etc.
Testing shouldn’t be a one-time thing – it should be continual. Why? Because things are always changing, especially on social media.
So, while you’re doubling down on a topic in step three, make sure that you’re continuing to test hooks in step one. This way, you’ll always have something to focus on in step three.
These four steps are simple and work every time.
And, that’s a wrap on this Dear Katie question.

Now I want to hear from you. Do you have a question?
Until next time, cheers to your success!
Katie
Start by testing various content formats like text posts, videos, and blogs to see what resonates most with your audience.
Monitor audience engagement and look for posts that receive a disproportionately high response compared to others.
Double down on that hook by creating different types of content around it and testing it on various platforms.
No, testing should be ongoing to adapt to changing audience preferences and trends in social media.
You can test your content on platforms like LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram to reach different audience segments.
Try different formats such as speaking directly to the camera, interviews, or tutorials to see what engages your audience best.
