On this week’s Dear Katie, I was asked a great question that is relevant for so many people right now. It often feels defeating trying to build authority in competitive niches, but you can stand out even in saturated niches.

This week’s question was, “I want to niche down in real estate and be the go-to expert, but it seems too saturated. Thoughts?”

Here’s the truth: if people are already doing it, that means there’s demand.

And if you consistently show up and do what others are unwilling to do, you can stand out even in crowded spaces.

How?

Let’s dive in.

7 Steps to Building Authority From Scratch – Even in a Saturated Niche

If you follow the steps below and have a personality-led brand, you can break through even in the most saturated industries.

1. Start Now

Acting takes a lot more effort than just saying, “I’m going to do something.” Annually, 92% of people who make a New Year’s resolution never finish them, and this is the same with a lot of things in life – like trying to build authority.

Start now.

You need to show people you’re an expert. If you never start, you’re going to watch your dreams and aspirations take a backseat in life.

But where do you start when there are so many platforms and niches?

2. Pick One Platform, One Problem, One Niche

You have your niche – and it’s a good start – but you need to:

  • Choose a platform to focus on.
  • Solve one problem and do it well.

I have a great article on how to do this that I recommend reading here.

3. Pitch Yourself to Podcasts

Podcast appearances are another great opportunity to get your name out there and start building your authority.

When pitching yourself to podcasts, focus on the value that you bring to the table. Remember that it’s not about what they can do for you – it’s what you can do for them.

If you get a “no” now, that doesn’t mean that it’s a “no” forever. Keep the relationship alive. Follow up and stay in touch. I’ve written about how to do so here.

4. Speak at Conferences

Public speaking builds authority fast. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and apply to speak at industry events.

Speaking engagements don’t necessarily have to be in person, either. You can speak at virtual conferences, in person or a combination of both.

If you’re turned down for speaking at an in-person conference, attend anyway and network like a rockstar.

5. Write for Industry Publications

One of the simplest ways to get your name out there is to start writing for industry publications.

Where is your niche seeking guidance?

Create a list of these publications, and start writing.

Answer their questions. Demonstrate your expertise to start building credibility and authority.

6. Engage with Your Audience

Don’t just post content for the sake of posting content. Engage with others! Respond to comments, message others, and create conversations.

Real engagement is the key to building real relationships that can help you build authority over time.

Especially when you’re just getting started, a thoughtful comment or message can have a greater impact than simply posting content.

7. Stay True to Your Values

Let your core values be your guide in everything. Create a brand that’s built around what you believe in.

Because, after all, it’s your values and your unique personality that will help you stand out in the crowd.

No one else is like you, and that’s your superpower – the key to making a name for yourself, even in a saturated niche.

And that’s a wrap on this Dear Katie question.
