What if a single post could lead to your next client, your next new hire, a speaking opportunity, a podcast interview or even your next job?
Sounds too good to be true? It isn’t. In fact, this is a reality for many accounting content creators.
And it’s a lot easier than you think to get started and build your online presence.
I’m going to walk you through 11 things you need to do to grow as an accounting content creator.
1. You Only Need Two Things: A Phone and an Editing App
You don’t need a fancy camera. You don’t need an expensive mic or lights (just stand in front of a window). You don’t need anything fancy to get started with content creation.
All you need are two things:
- Your phone
- An editing app like CapCut or Descript
If you want to spend just a little bit of money, you can get an external mic.
But the point is that you don’t need anything more than what you already have to get started. And if you’re saying, “Well, I want it to look better,” I promise you, you can make it look quite nice with the tools I just mentioned.
So, don’t put up any barriers here. You don’t need to invest in expensive equipment because you already have everything you need.
2. Master the Art of Hooks
Imagine you created a post that said, “Hey guys, today I’m going to teach you about tax planning.”
Most people are not going to be interested at all
In other words, that’s not very engaging, is it?
But if you said, “Today I’m going to show you exactly how I helped save a client $58,000 in taxes,” you have my attention.
That’s a hook. It pulls you in.
Think about movie trailers. You see the action. It grabs your attention and makes you think, “I want to go watch that movie and see what happens.”
Treat your content the same way.
Study hooks and figure out how you can tell a story or provide an educational tip in a way that hooks the person in.
3. Tell Your Story
If you want to create the type of content that keeps people engaged, you need to learn how to tell a story. Specifically, you need to tell YOUR story.
When I talk about sharing your story, telling your story, and infusing your story into your content, it can make some people nervous.
They say, “Hey, I don’t want to give the whole internet details about my personal life.”
I get it.
But let’s look at an example. Gary Vaynerchuk is a well-known influencer. We know his story about him growing up and helping his father run their liquor store, right? But we don’t know anything about his kids.
Yet you still feel like you know him.
In marketing and business, that whole “knowing someone” is crucial. It’s all about the know and trust.
Sharing your story is the best way for people to get to know you and start trusting you.
And today, sharing your personal story is more important than ever. AI content is everywhere. There’s so much educational content, too.
Your story, your perspectives, your point of view? These are the few things people can’t get from AI.
So think about:
- How are you going to share your story?
- How are you going to make yourself visible and allow people to know you?
Everyone’s angle on this is different. Figure out yours.
4. Post Consistently and Don’t Chase Perfection
Consistency is a huge piece of the content creation puzzle. It’s how you build an audience and authority.
But what does “consistently” mean?
If you want to record videos and aren’t experienced, this looks like taking a video every single day.
Before you freak out..
Now, this doesn’t mean that you’re going to post that video every single day, but you need to record one.
Why?
Because that’s the fastest way to get comfortable.
Not doing videos? You need to be creating textual content regularly.
If you’re new, create it daily.
The reason I recommend daily content creation is because 99% of people are not naturally good at this when they start.
Even the best creators are not going to look back at their content from 10 years ago and be like, “Wow, I was just as good then as I am today.”
It takes practice. It takes work. If you’re not consistently doing it, it’s really hard to get the experience you need to become the accounting content creator you want to become.
The obvious that must be said: Don’t Chase Perfection.
Just let it go. This doesn’t mean posting something that you think is poor quality. It means that you should stop worrying about being perfect.
No one is.
The only way to get better is by practicing, and even then, nothing is perfect.
Get comfortable with saying, “You know what? This is my 90%.” And what your 90% looks like when you start will be different from what your 90% looks like when you’ve been doing this for years.
5. Watch Your Analytics, But Don’t Be Married to Them
Analytics gives you insight into who’s liking your content and what topics are resonating.
But don’t be married to them.
Here’s why:
- You have no control over them.
- Algorithms are algorithms. What’s going viral today may not go viral next week.
Instead, ask yourself, “Am I getting closer to my goal? Is my strategy getting more eyeballs on my brand? Are people seeing my content? Are people talking to me about it?”
What your goal is depends on you as an individual and what you want to get out of becoming an accounting content creator.
But ultimately, the only thing that matters is whether you’re achieving your goals with your content.
So, watch your analytics, but have discernment over how much they guide your creation process.
6. Build a Community, Not an Audience
Rather than just trying to get followers, build a community that is engaged. Build a community that you have conversations with.
What does that look like?
- People comment on your post.
- You comment back.
- You comment on their posts.
You start building a network of people that you’re not just interacting with, but those people that follow you, they’re interacting with one another.
Those relationships? They’re everything.
It doesn’t matter if platforms or algorithms change. Your community will follow you anywhere.
7. Make Your Voice Camera-Ready
Want to improve your video or podcast content? Change your voice. I don’t mean permanently. I mean, learning how to adjust your pitch for your audience.
Drop your voice down. Slow it down. Don’t let it get high-pitched.
Just relax, breathe and let your voice flow out.
8. Get Ready for the Day
If you want to stay consistent with your content creation, make sure you’re ready for the day.
If you work from home, it’s easy to hang around in your gym clothes all day.
But if you look like you just rolled out of bed, you’re not going to want to record a video that day, right?
So, make it a point to get ready every single day. Put something on that makes you feel confident, whatever that may be.
9. Edit Your Own Videos at the Start
I’m usually the first person to recommend outsourcing and getting help with things that aren’t in your zone of genius.
But in this case, I recommend that you edit your videos to start. Or if you really don’t want to take on this task, at least watch your videos back.
That’s really the main thing here.
Because when you watch your content, you are learning, “Okay, I don’t like when I do this or that, but I do like when I do this.”
And when you edit yourself, you get to see how fast you talk, your pitch and what you like or don’t like in your communication style.
10. Study Other Creators
Learning from others is one of the best ways to improve your own content. But don’t just study other accounting content creators. There are many amazing creators out there.
Study their style. Their format. Their hooks.
See what you can take away from their content to improve your own.
11. Go Into This Knowing You’ll Probably Hate Your Content at First
Yes, it’s true. You probably won’t like your content at first. You won’t like the way you sound on camera (most people don’t). You’re probably going to say, “Oh, I don’t like how this looks,” whether it’s the angle, your lighting or how you say something.
But here’s the harsh truth: You just have to get over it.
You will improve over time. You can upgrade your gear over time.
Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to be perfect or fit a certain mold.
The Takeaway
Becoming an accounting content creator isn’t complicated. The most important step is to get started. Let go of perfectionism and be consistent.
If you follow the steps in this guide, I promise you’ll be so much closer to your end goal 90 days from now.
