4 Marketing Myths Holding Your Firm Back

Feel like your marketing is getting you nowhere? You’re not alone. And if you believe the four myths I’m going to talk about today, this could be why.

For years now, marketers have been touting these four things.

But if you believe them, they’ll leave you feeling frustrated or worse, you may want to give up on your marketing altogether.

The fourth myth is the most believed and the one that’s holding you back the most.

4 Marketing Myths That are Killing Your Firm’s Growth

1. Social Media is for Lead Generation

Full disclaimer here: Social media has been the number one driver of my business. It’s also the number one driver of building many firms’ businesses as well.

The problem is that social media’s primary purpose is not to generate leads. It’s to build trust.

Because most people who are scrolling social media aren’t going to see one post from you and suddenly decide to leave their accountants. That’s just not realistic.

But your posts can do something that’s just as important: build trust.

And over time, as they see more of your content and you build relationships, it will open the door for that conversation of them becoming a client.

Accounting is a high-trust business. Social media can help you build that trust.

Flip your mindset and start treating social platforms as places to connect with people and let them get to know you.

2. Volume is King

You hear it everywhere: if you want to succeed on social media, you need to post every single day.

That’s not true anymore.

Think about it this way. If you were looking for an accountant, which firm would stand out?

The one posting generic AI-generated content every day?

Or the one posting two or three times a week with memorable opinions, strong insights, real client transformations, and ideas you’ve never heard before?

I’d choose the second one every time, and you likely would too.

Now, don’t get me wrong. You still need to show up consistently. If you disappear for months at a time, you’ll lose momentum. But posting a few high-quality pieces each week is far more valuable than posting mediocre content every day.

In today’s social media landscape, quality beats quantity.

3. You Need to be Everywhere

The gold standard in marketing has always been that you need to be on all platforms, posting all the time and having a presence everywhere with an engaged community.

The reality?

That’s not realistic for most people.

If you want to get results from social media, you need to be doing more than just posting.

You need to be:

  • Adding new connections
  • Replying to your messages
  • Replying to comments on your posts
  • Commenting on other people’s posts
  • Starting conversations with people in direct messages

There are so many things you need to do on a single platform that trying to be everywhere will have you being nowhere.

If you want to cross-post your content, that’s perfectly fine. In fact, it can be really helpful. But just go into it knowing that you likely won’t get the results you want unless you’re deploying a full strategy for each one and creating content specifically for each platform.

4. Content Takes a Lot of Time, Especially Videos

This is probably the most believed myth on this list. And it’s the one that’s holding you back the most.

Quality content doesn’t necessarily have to take a ton of time.

The reality is that you’re probably just uncomfortable, especially when it comes to creating video content. You’re scared. You don’t want to be judged. You don’t have enough time.

You can find an endless number of reasons why it’s not a good time to film a video.

But here’s the reality:

  • It only takes whatever time is required for you to have a thought and pull out your phone to capture that video.
  • You can find so many people to edit and handle the post-production end of things.

Time is not the issue here. And as someone who has been doing this for over a decade, I can tell you that you will never feel ready.

The best thing you can do is just get started.

Just hit record, and let someone else handle the editing and post-production. In fact, that’s something our team can do for you.

The main thing is to get started. Because the more you put yourself out there, the more you build trust online, and trust is the most valuable commodity in this industry.

The Takeaway

These four marketing myths hold so many firm (and business) owners back from reaching their growth goals. If you stop believing them and just get started, you will be amazed at how far you’ve come months from now.
